About the event
Expressionism is the polar opposite of Realism. Both challenging and liberating, the performer is invited to explore the full expressive potential of their body, face and voice. Stage space will be sculpted, multi-sensory atmospheres created. This is ‘outside-in’ acting - like creating a Van Gogh painting on stage!
In Expressionist theatre, the dramatic action is seen through the eyes of the protagonist depicting their inner state and their subjective vision of the outside. Often distorted or dream-like, Expressionist plays can be intense, dark and fragmented, or satirically comical with grotesque Buffon characters.
This intensive one-day course will cover corporeal mime, the grotesque, the chorus of heightened expression, physicalisation of language and the actor-spectator dynamic.
When: Saturday 13th November 2021, 10am-5.00pm
